Every moment of your life you are being watched, even at home and on your own you are constantly being monitored. Your future self is watching you right now through your eyes.
The best theme I have seen about this was from Interstellar when *SPOILERS* Matthew McConaughey is stuck in the tesseract and he is traversing through time almost like pages in a book. He watches himself and his previous actions, all he can do is watch as he leaves his daughter. Screaming to stay but he can’t change the past.
I thought this was a great representation of how you reflect upon yourself. Walking through your memories almost like traversing through pages of a book, or reversing a video. You are looking back at moments of yourself for better or for worse, and all you can do is watch and maybe scream internally.
But in this reflection it paves the way for you to analyse the choices you made. You can ask yourself:
- What went right?
- What went wrong?
- How should I have approached this decision?
- What is the lesson from this decision, and how can I implement it going forward?
Perhaps for true reflection you take pen to paper and write down the whole memory as best as you can remember. The dissect it to understand based on the the information, knowledge, experience, and mindset you had then at the particular period of time, how you came to that choice. Then ask yourself, based on all the information, knowledge, experience, mindset, and wisdom as time has gone on, would you make that same decision? Or what questions would you have asked yourself to ensure you made the right decision.
Perhaps that BMW 140i when you’re fresh out of university was a great idea, who doesn’t love a fast car with the prestige that the marque gives you, but 3 years later as you’re a little older, wiser, and more financially savvy you may ask yourself: “Was that a sound financial decision at the time?” Perhaps that answer is yes or no. It all depends on you and your circumstances. You could be screaming at yourself to say your money could have been better invested towards something to help your future.
The next time you make a big decision, it might be worth stopping and asking yourself: “What would future me, a wiser and more savvy version say or do?”
Until next time
