ONE MUST IMAGINE SISYPHUS HAPPY

My mantra for life is that no matter what happens you must keep pushing that boulder up the mountain. You simply have to keep moving forward no matter what happens. I take my inspiration from the myth of Sisyphus.

Who is Sisyphus?

The myth of Sisyphus was the founder and King of the city of Ephyra. Sisyphus angered the gods by going against their sacred traditions of hospitality by trickery of others, and abused his power by killing visitors. His punishment was to roll a giant boulder up a hill which will then roll back down when it reached near the top, repeating for eternity.

That sounds horrible!

Yes, I don’t condone Sisyphus’ actions. But the myth resonates with me. I like to use it as an allegory for you life. I see life as a form of low level suffering, and that suffering to me is the act of continuously pushing that boulder up the hill (or mountain as I put it).

How does this affect my life?

The way I see it is that life is a long struggle, life is not easy, it requires hard work and dedication to make the best of it. I picture it as myself pushing the boulder up that mountain. The pushing of the boulder signifies the endless toil, hard work, and struggle that is our lives. We spend our days sacrificing the today to provide better days in our future as our journey comes to an end.

But unlike the myth we have a little more control over the boulder, we can slow down, we can stop, we can rest, and we can then carry on. But for as long as we go on, we must keep pushing the boulder up the mountain each day building our resilience and making each day a little bit better than the last.

Until next time
